About the game
In Pandemic, four virulent diseases have broken out across the globe, and players are disease-fighting specialists racing to treat outbreaks and discover cures before the world succumbs. On each turn, players spend up to four actions to travel between cities, treat infections, build research stations, or work toward a cure, all while an Infection deck seeded with escalating Epidemic! cards accelerates the crisis. Each player's unique role, such as the Operations Expert or the Scientist, offers special abilities that must be combined strategically with teammates' strengths. The team wins together by curing all four diseases, or loses together if the outbreaks spiral out of control.
Hobbli's Notes
Pandemic is the quintessential gateway cooperative game: its tense shared decision-making has introduced countless players to the genre, and it still holds up as one of the best. The variable roles keep the group dynamic interesting, and the escalating tension of the Epidemic cards creates real edge-of-your-seat moments. It's an easy first recommendation for anyone new to co-op games, though it does rely on a group that communicates well together.
What we like
- It's one of the best gateway cooperative games for new players.
- Variable player roles add asymmetric strategy to each session.
- The rising tension of Epidemic cards keeps every game exciting.
- It's quick to teach and quick to play.
Keep in mind
- A dominant player can end up quarterbacking the group's decisions.
- Bad epidemic draws can create unfair difficulty spikes.
- The base game offers limited long-term replayability without expansions.
- An all-or-nothing team loss can feel deflating after a long game.
