About the game
Forbidden Island is a cooperative adventure in which 2-4 players work together to capture four sacred treasures before a sinking island claims them. Players move across a modular board of beautifully illustrated tiles, using unique character abilities to shore up flooding areas, collect treasures, and escape before the island disappears beneath the waves. As the water level rises, tiles sink permanently, raising the tension turn by turn. It's an approachable, fast-playing co-op with genuine push-your-luck drama.
Hobbli's Notes
Forbidden Island remains one of the best gateway co-op games: quick to teach, quick to play, and genuinely tense as the island crumbles beneath you. Matt Leacock's design, from the creator of Pandemic, balances difficulty levels nicely, so it scales from a light family game to a real challenge. A great choice when you want cooperative tension without a long rules explanation.
What we like
- Easy to teach, making it an excellent gateway co-op game.
- Adjustable difficulty levels suit different group experience.
- High-quality components and vibrant tile artwork.
- Fast 30-minute playtime fits easily into any game night.
Keep in mind
- Limited strategic depth compared to heavier co-op games.
- Can feel repetitive after many plays.
- One dominant player can sometimes direct the whole team's decisions.
