About the game

King of New York puts players in control of giant monsters rampaging through the Big Apple, rolling dice to attack rivals, heal damage, or earn energy for powerful abilities. A standalone follow-up to King of Tokyo, it introduces a district-based city board and a "Fame" mechanic that lets monsters become media stars for bonus points. Smashing buildings brings rewards but also draws a stronger military response, adding a satisfying risk-reward loop. Quick turns, push-your-luck dice rolling, and monster mayhem make it an easy, boisterous game for groups. It's compatible with King of Tokyo, letting monsters and boards be mixed across both games.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's editorial team enjoys King of New York as a louder, more tactical sibling to King of Tokyo - the added district movement and building destruction inject some spatial strategy into the simple dice-chucking core. Fame and military response create a nice extra push-your-luck layer beyond hit points. It plays fast and loud, which is exactly the point. Some may find it's still fundamentally a light dice game underneath the new bells and whistles.

What we like

  • Simple dice-rolling core makes it instantly accessible.
  • Fame mechanic and building destruction add tactical depth over King of Tokyo.
  • Fast, boisterous turns keep the whole table engaged.
  • Compatible with King of Tokyo components for extra variety.

Keep in mind

  • Player elimination can leave early losers waiting.
  • Luck-driven dice rolling limits strategic depth.
  • Can run long with the full six players.
