About the game
Heredity: Book of Swan is a cooperative, narrative campaign game that casts you as a family surviving a post-apocalyptic world across five story-driven chapters totaling 12-15 hours of play. Each chapter unfolds through modular terrain, character encounters, and narrative cards that shift the scene based on your choices. Four playable family members act alongside the young, non-playable Swan, using shared action tokens to talk, explore, move, fight, or scavenge better gear. A shifting karma deck influences combat and skill checks while tracking your evolving morale and story path, all without needing a companion app. It's an ambitious, app-less storytelling experience built for groups who want to live out their own survival drama.
Hobbli's Notes
This is a big commitment, but the app-less approach to a deeply branching narrative campaign is impressive; the karma deck evolving alongside your choices is a clever way to keep consequences feeling personal. It clearly draws on Mad Max/Walking Dead-style post-apocalyptic fiction, and the flexible player count (including solo) is a nice touch for a game this narratively dense. It's a serious time investment, so casual groups may want to look elsewhere.
What we like
- Deep, branching narrative campaign without needing a companion app.
- Karma deck mechanic personalizes consequences based on player choices.
- Flexible for solo or cooperative group play.
- Strong post-apocalyptic theming throughout the five chapters.
Keep in mind
- Very long total campaign length is a big commitment.
- Niche narrative design may not suit players wanting replayability.
- Complex token and equipment systems add setup overhead.
Who it's for
Best for narrative-focused gamers ages 14+ willing to commit to a long campaign, playable solo or in groups up to 4.
