About the game

This War of Mine: The Board Game adapts the acclaimed video game into a cooperative tabletop experience about civilians surviving a besieged, war-torn city. By day, players manage their shelter, scavenging materials, building tools, and tending to each other's needs, while nights are spent guarding the shelter or venturing out into dangerous locations to search for supplies. A scripts mechanism drives a deep, branching narrative, and an epilogues system determines how the survivors' story ultimately ends.

Hobbli's Notes

This is one of the most emotionally weighty cooperative games available, unflinchingly portraying the human cost of war rather than glorifying it. The narrative choices genuinely matter, and the solo mode preserves the full experience. It's not a game for every group, but it's unforgettable for the right one.

What we like

  • Deeply immersive and emotionally impactful storytelling.
  • Strong cooperative decision-making under constant pressure.
  • Solo mode retains the full narrative weight of the experience.
  • Scripts mechanism creates a unique story in every playthrough.

Keep in mind

  • Mature and grim subject matter is not suited to every group.
  • Long playtime of around two hours per session.
  • Considerable rules to track for a narrative-focused game.

Who it's for

Best for mature cooperative gamers ages 18 and up who want a heavy, narrative-driven survival experience, playing solo or in groups of up to six.
