About the game

Oasis puts 3-5 players in charge of a Mongolian family competing to become the most powerful in the land. Through careful bidding and tile placement, players claim steppe territories to raise horses, build sacred temples, grow camel caravans, and control life-giving oases. Hand management and auction mechanics combine as players jockey for the most valuable plots of land. The player who accumulates the most points by game's end is crowned Noble of the Oasis.

Hobbli's Notes

Designed by Alan R. Moon of Ticket to Ride fame, Oasis offers a more understated auction-and-territory game that rewards careful resource planning. The multiple paths to scoring, livestock, temples, caravans, oases, give players room to specialize. Its 60-minute playtime and moderate downtime make it a solid mid-weight choice for family strategy nights, though it doesn't have quite the instant appeal of Moon's biggest hits.

What we like

  • Multiple scoring paths encourage varied strategies.
  • Auction mechanic keeps every player engaged in bidding decisions.
  • Attractive Mongolian steppe theme is distinct from typical Euro settings.
  • Designed by a well-regarded, experienced designer.

Keep in mind

  • Higher downtime grade may slow the pace for some groups.
  • Auction-heavy play can create analysis paralysis.
  • Theme is largely pasted-on rather than deeply integrated.

Who it's for
