About the game

Britannia is a classic historical wargame recreating the centuries-long struggle for control of England, Scotland, and Wales, from the Roman invasion of 43 A.D. through the Norman conquest of 1066. Players command shifting waves of Angles, Saxons, Picts, Norsemen, Scots, Irish, and other peoples as history's tides turn across the board. Its rules encourage broadly historical outcomes while still allowing players real freedom to rewrite key moments: what if Boudicca's revolt had succeeded, or William the Conqueror had fallen in 1066? At five hours, it's a true epic wargame experience.

Hobbli's Notes

Britannia is a landmark design in the area-control wargame genre: few games manage to compress a thousand years of British history into a single afternoon-length session this convincingly. The shifting-nation structure, where you control different peoples at different points in the game, is a brilliant way to keep every player engaged across the full timeline. It's a serious commitment at five hours and a hefty complexity rating, so it's best reserved for dedicated wargaming groups with the time to spare.

What we like

  • Innovative shifting-nation structure keeps every player engaged across history.
  • Rich historical theme with meaningful 'what if' decision points.
  • Deep strategic depth rewards long-term planning.
  • Considered a landmark, influential design in the wargame genre.

Keep in mind

  • Five-hour playtime demands a serious time commitment.
  • High complexity and rules overhead for newer wargamers.
  • Significant downtime between turns, especially with five players.
