About the game
Dune is the classic 1979 board game of political intrigue, bluffing, and combat set on Frank Herbert's desert planet. Each player commands one of the great factions vying for control of the spice-rich world, wielding unique powers as they negotiate shifting alliances and betrayals with the other players around the table. Movement, storms, and giant sandworms threaten everyone's plans, while combat is resolved through hidden bids backed by treachery cards, keeping every clash uncertain until the reveal. Victory demands as much diplomatic skill as tactical planning, since no single faction can win without navigating the delicate balance of power. It's a sprawling, negotiation-heavy epic that inspired much of the modern political board game genre.
Hobbli's Notes
Dune remains one of the towering achievements of negotiation-driven board gaming, and its DNA is visible in countless modern designs. The asymmetric factions genuinely play differently, and the hidden-bid combat keeps every confrontation nerve-wracking. It does demand a group willing to fully lean into scheming and table talk: this isn't a game you can coast through quietly. For the right group, though, few games generate as many memorable, story-worthy moments.
