About the game

Overboss: A Boss Monster Adventure sends rival dungeon bosses out of their lairs to conquer the Overworld above. Each turn, players draft and place terrain tiles and monster tokens, building out a map of forests, swamps, caves, and graveyards to maximize their Power. Set collection rewards larger groupings of the same terrain type, while placed monsters score bonuses for grouping or matching terrain. Set in the retro pixel-art world of the best-selling Boss Monster series, it offers a fresh puzzly drafting experience distinct from the original dungeon-building game. Up to five players compete to become the ultimate Overboss.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's team enjoys how Overboss takes the beloved Boss Monster pixel-art aesthetic and applies it to a completely different, puzzle-forward drafting-and-tile-placement game. Balancing optimal terrain placement against disrupting opponents' sets gives it real tactical bite despite its light, colorful presentation. The solo mode is a nice bonus for fans who want to noodle on the puzzle alone. It's an easy recommendation for Boss Monster fans looking for something new, or for anyone who enjoys drafting and set-collection tile games.

What we like

  • Fresh puzzly drafting experience distinct from the original Boss Monster game.
  • Charming retro pixel-art aesthetic carried over from the Boss Monster series.
  • Set collection and terrain matching create meaningful tactical choices.
  • Supports up to five players plus a solo mode for solo play.

Keep in mind

  • May feel disconnected from the original Boss Monster dungeon-building game for series fans.
  • Set-collection scoring can require some upfront explanation.
  • Terrain and monster interactions add a bit of rules overhead for a light game.

Who it's for
