About the game
Sierra West puts players in the role of a 19th-century wagon expedition leader guiding pioneers over the Sierra Nevada mountains toward California. Each turn, you overlap and arrange three cards on your player board to reveal a shifting set of action icons, then move your pioneers along the resulting paths to gather resources, build cabins, and advance your wagon. Four modular expansion sets (Apple Hill, Gold Rush, Boats & Banjos, and Outlaws & Outposts) each add unique thematic content and alternate paths to victory. With a robust solo mode and a playtime under an hour, it's widely praised as an innovative blend of action-programming, deck-building, and worker placement.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's editorial team considers Sierra West one of the standout lighter-weight strategy releases of its year, thanks to its clever card-overlapping action system and satisfying puzzle-like turns. The four included modules give it exceptional variety and replayability without adding much rules overhead. Designer Jonny Pac's action-queue mechanism feels fresh even for experienced gamers, and the strong solo mode by David Turczi is a real bonus. It's an easy recommendation for fans of tight, thematic Euro games looking for something a little different.
