About the game
Tyrants of the Underdark is a territory-control game with a deck-building core, set in the Forgotten Realms below the Sword Coast. Each player leads a house of Drow, building a personalized deck of minion cards drawn from five aspects of Drow society, each favoring a different strategy such as assassination or recruitment. Players spend influence to recruit new minions from a shared marketplace and power to place troops, expand across the map, and eliminate enemy forces. Points come from controlling sites, recruiting valuable minions, and promoting them to your inner circle, making for a tense blend of hand-building and area control.
Hobbli's Notes
Tyrants of the Underdark does a clever job of marrying deck-building with area control, giving both systems real weight instead of one overshadowing the other. The Drow society theme and D&D pedigree give it a strong thematic hook for fantasy fans, and the direct conflict between players keeps games from feeling too solitary. It's a satisfying pick for groups who like their deck-builders with teeth.
What we like
- The fusion of deck-building with territory control feels genuinely fresh.
- Direct player interaction through assassination and combat keeps tension high.
- The Forgotten Realms theme gives strong flavor to the five minion aspects.
- It teaches reasonably quickly for the strategic depth it offers.
Keep in mind
- Combative take-that elements may not suit players who dislike direct conflict.
- Early turns can feel slow while your deck is still thin.
- A strong map lead can snowball if not checked by opponents.
- Solo play options are limited.
Who it's for
Good for fans of the D&D setting and deck-building/area-control games ages 14+, in groups of 2-4.
