About the game

Star Realms is a fast, pocket-sized deck-building duel where two rival factions battle for galactic dominance. Using Trade to acquire powerful Ships and Bases and Combat to blast your opponent's Authority down to zero, each turn is a quick tactical puzzle about timing and faction synergy. Games typically wrap up in about 20 minutes, making it easy to squeeze in multiple rounds. Designed by Magic: The Gathering Hall of Famers, it blends deck-building strategy with the snappy interactivity of trading card game combat.

Hobbli's Notes

Star Realms nails "easy to learn, hard to master": the core loop is simple enough to teach in five minutes, yet the four-faction ally system offers real strategic depth as you improve. Its small footprint and short playtime make it a fantastic take-anywhere game, ideal for a quick lunch-break match or a lightweight travel companion. The tradeoff is that with only two players in the base set, it's not a party game, and luck of the draw can swing close games.

What we like

  • Extremely portable and quick to set up for a 20-minute game.
  • Faction-based ally abilities add real strategic depth.
  • Low cost of entry with a self-contained two-player box.
  • Easy to teach, making it approachable for newer gamers.
  • Expands nicely into multiplayer with additional standalone sets.

Keep in mind

  • Base set only supports two players.
  • Card draw luck can decide close games.
  • Direct combat can feel swingy for players who dislike aggressive take-that play.

Who it's for

Perfect for two players, teens through adults, who want a short, punchy strategy duel; great for travel or quick sessions between busier games.
