About the game

Dominion is the game that invented the deck-building genre, casting each player as a monarch racing to expand a small kingdom into a mighty dominion. Every player begins with an identical starter deck and, over the course of the game, buys new cards from a shared marketplace to make their deck faster and more powerful. This Second Edition refreshes the classic with six new Kingdom card types plus a rewritten rulebook. With 26 available Kingdom cards randomized to just 10 per game, no two sessions play quite alike.

Hobbli's Notes

Dominion earns its reputation as the foundational deck-builder: the core loop of buying, thinning, and combo-ing your deck is endlessly satisfying and easy to teach. The Second Edition's card updates keep the design feeling fresh even for veterans of the original. Its lack of a board or miniatures means it's easy to store and travel with, though the base game's card pool can feel thin without expansions layered in. It's an essential shelf staple for anyone building a strategy game collection.

What we like

  • The randomized Kingdom card selection gives huge variety from game to game.
  • Simple core rules make it easy to teach new players.
  • Tight 30-minute playtime suits a quick strategy session.
  • Deep strategic depth rewards repeated plays and deck-optimization thinking.
  • Considered the genre-defining deck-building game with strong community support.

Keep in mind

  • The base game alone can feel repetitive without expansions.
  • Card text requires some reading and rules lookups for newer players.
  • Limited direct player interaction beyond attack cards.

Who it's for

Great for ages 14 and up, from casual family groups to serious strategy gamers who enjoy building efficient engines; plays well with 2-4 players.
