About the game

Thunderstone sends heroes into the Dungeons of Grimhold to defeat monsters before the Doom Knights can claim the titular relic. Building on the deck-building formula popularized by Dominion, players recruit heroes and supplies to strengthen their decks, then spend cards attacking a shared row of monsters for victory points and experience. Defeated monsters become powerful additions to your deck, while heroes level up into stronger versions. It's a fantasy-flavored deck-builder with real tactical bite.

Hobbli's Notes

Thunderstone remains a solid, fantasy-themed take on deck-building, with the added tension of choosing when to brave the dungeon versus building up your engine in town. The interplay between hero types and monster weaknesses gives real tactical texture beyond simple deck optimization. It's a bit more combat-focused and fiddly than Dominion, which some deck-builder purists love and others find cumbersome. A great pick for fantasy fans who want their card game to feel like an adventure.

What we like

  • Fantasy dungeon-crawl theme gives deck-building real narrative weight.
  • Hero and monster matchups add tactical depth beyond simple engine-building.
  • Leveling up heroes provides a satisfying sense of progression.
  • Scales from solo play up to five players.

Keep in mind

  • More fiddly and rules-heavy than lighter deck-builders like Dominion.
  • Combat calculations can slow down turns at higher complexity.
  • Card variety requires some setup time to sort and prepare.
