About the game

Barony is an area-control game in which players build a randomized hex-tile kingdom and vie to become its next ruler. Each turn, players choose exactly one of six actions: recruiting knights, moving them across the landscape, constructing villages and strongholds, founding new cities, embarking on expeditions, or spending resources to climb the noble ranks from baron to duke. Once someone reaches the rank of duke, the round finishes and victory points are tallied based on resources, rank, and city count. The single-action-per-turn structure keeps the game snappy despite its strategic depth. It's a lean, tense race for territorial and political dominance.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's team likes how Barony distills area-control gaming down to one crisp decision per turn: the simplicity of choosing a single action belies the depth of the resulting strategy. The randomized modular board keeps every game fresh, and the noble-title race adds a satisfying alternate path to scoring beyond pure territory grabs. It moves briskly for the genre, making it a good entry point for players newer to area-control games. Fans of tighter, faster-playing strategy titles should enjoy its 45-minute runtime.

What we like

  • Single-action-per-turn structure keeps play brisk and focused.
  • Randomized modular board ensures high replayability.
  • Multiple paths to victory through territory, rank, and resources.
  • Accessible entry point into area-control strategy games.

Keep in mind

  • Some downtime while planning complex multi-turn strategies.
  • Noble-title race can feel like a race to end the game abruptly for some.
  • Limited direct theme beyond abstract medieval territory building.
