About the game
Inis is a Celtic-themed area-majority game in which players compete to be crowned King of the Island through leadership, territorial control, or religious influence rather than outright conquest. Each round, players draft action cards during an Assembly, then use them to move clans, build settlements, and trigger special epic tales inspired by Irish mythology. Though clans can battle, eliminating opponents actually works against the leadership victory condition, encouraging more nuanced diplomacy than typical territory games. It's a beautifully illustrated game of clever card drafting and shifting alliances.
Hobbli's Notes
Inis is a refreshing take on area-control games, deliberately discouraging pure conquest in favor of careful alliance-building and card drafting. The rotating drafted hand of action cards keeps every round tense and unpredictable, and the mythological flavor cards add wonderful narrative texture. It's a game that rewards restraint and reading the table as much as bold plays, making it stand apart from typical 'dudes on a map' designs.
What we like
- Clever drafting mechanism keeps every round fresh and tense.
- Multiple victory conditions discourage pure conquest play.
- Rich Celtic mythology theme adds memorable flavor.
- Rewards diplomacy and reading opponents over brute force.
Keep in mind
- New players often mistakenly play it as a pure battle game.
- Card drafting can create swingy hands in some rounds.
- Direct conflict, while limited, can still eliminate clans and frustrate players.
Who it's for
Great for strategy gamers aged 14+ who enjoy area-majority games with diplomacy and drafting, in groups of 2-4.
