About the game

Machi Koro tasks two to four players with growing a tiny city into the largest in the region by rolling dice each turn to trigger income from owned buildings. Matching rolls activate wheat fields, bakeries, cheese factories, and eventually radio towers, letting players buy new establishments and landmarks. Some buildings let you profit from opponents' rolls too, so everyone's turn matters. The first player to build all their landmarks wins.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's editors see this as a modern classic of light city-building, easy to teach in minutes yet full of small tactical decisions about which buildings to prioritize. The dice-driven income can swing luck heavily in some games, but that's part of its breezy charm. It's an easy recommendation for game nights that need something quick and welcoming. A great gateway game for newer players.

What we like

  • Quick and easy to teach even to first-time gamers.
  • Satisfying engine-building as your city develops.
  • Light dice-rolling keeps the pace brisk and fun.
  • Plays fast, usually wrapping up in about 30 minutes.

Keep in mind

  • Significant luck from dice rolls affects outcomes.
  • Limited player interaction beyond stealing income.
  • Can suffer from a runaway leader once a strong engine forms.

Who it's for

Great for families and new gamers ages 10 and up looking for a quick, easy-to-learn city-building game.
