About the game
Tokaido invites 1-5 players to travel Japan's East Sea Road at a leisurely pace, savoring meals, meeting people, and collecting souvenirs along the way. Whoever is farthest behind on the road always moves next, so you must choose between racing ahead or lingering to gather more experiences before your turn ends. Scoring comes from a variety of roughly equal paths, from panoramas and temples to hot springs and market goods, so no single strategy dominates. Gorgeous, calming artwork reinforces its reputation as one of the most relaxing games on the shelf.
Hobbli's Notes
Tokaido is a lovely palate-cleanser between heavier games, and its 'last player moves next' turn order is a small stroke of design genius that keeps everyone engaged. There's very little confrontation here, which is exactly the point for players who want a beautiful, unhurried experience. It's not deep, but it never claims to be.
What we like
- Catch-up turn order keeps every player engaged throughout the trip.
- Stunning art direction and production values.
- Multiple roughly equal scoring paths avoid a single dominant strategy.
- Easy to teach and gentle enough for non-gamers.
Keep in mind
- Very little direct player interaction or conflict.
- Light strategic depth compared to typical strategy euros.
- Some players may find the 'always someone else's turn' structure gives less agency.
Who it's for
Ideal for families and casual groups aged 8+ who want a low-conflict, visually striking journey game; works well solo too.
