About the game

Hyperborea is a light civilization game where six rival realms send warriors and explorers into a newly-opened mythical land full of ruins, ghosts, and ancient secrets. Using a distinctive bag-building system, players draw civilicubes representing war, trade, movement, building, knowledge, and growth to activate their kingdom's technologies. Over the course of the game, kingdoms expand their armies, territory, and research in a race for dominance. With a runtime scaled to player count, it delivers a big civilization feel in a relatively tight package.

Hobbli's Notes

Hyperborea packs a genuinely epic civilization-building feel into a surprisingly approachable bag-building system. The corruption cube mechanic, where advancing technology introduces waste into your own bag, is a clever bit of thematic friction that keeps players from simply snowballing. It does run long at higher player counts, so it's best suited to groups ready to commit a full evening. Fans of area control and asymmetric factions will find plenty to love here.

What we like

  • Bag-building system offers a fresh spin on resource and action management.
  • Corruption cubes create clever tension between growth and efficiency.
  • Asymmetric factions add distinct flavor to each playthrough.
  • Modular map and tech tree support strong replayability.

Keep in mind

  • Playtime scales up significantly with more players.
  • High complexity and rules overhead may deter casual gamers.
  • Can suffer from analysis paralysis in the tech and cube-drawing decisions.
