About the game

Backgammon is one of the oldest games in the world, a race-and-capture abstract game for two players dating back thousands of years. Each player moves 15 checkers around the board based on dice rolls, trying to be first to bear all their pieces off. Along the way, players can hit and send opposing checkers back to the start, and the doubling cube adds a layer of risk-and-reward betting to raise the stakes. Despite its simple rules, deep strategy exists in weighing risk against the dice-driven randomness of each roll.

Hobbli's Notes

Backgammon has survived five thousand years for a reason: it's endlessly replayable and rewards genuine skill in probability and risk assessment. The doubling cube in particular elevates it from a casual pastime to a legitimate competitive pursuit. It's compact and portable, making it a great grab-and-go two-player game. If you've never tried it beyond childhood, revisiting it as an adult reveals surprising strategic depth.

What we like

  • Millennia-old design with proven, timeless replayability.
  • Quick to learn but has real strategic depth via the doubling cube.
  • Highly portable and works well for travel.
  • Great mix of luck and skill keeps games close and exciting.

Keep in mind

  • Strictly two players, so it doesn't scale for groups.
  • Heavy dice reliance may frustrate players who dislike luck-based outcomes.
  • Lacks thematic or narrative elements for players wanting immersive theme.
