About the game
Hornet Leader: Carrier Air Operations is a solo wargame that puts you in command of a U.S. Navy strike squadron flying the F/A-18 Hornet across historically inspired campaigns from Libya 1984 to a hypothetical Iran 2014. You plan missions, arm your aircraft, and choose which pilots to send into harm's way, all while managing pilot fatigue and growing experience over a campaign. Dice rolling and drafting drive the action resolution, while the mission-planning layer creates real risk-versus-reward decisions about who to fly and how hard to push them. Eight distinct historically accurate campaigns give the game substantial long-term variety for a solitaire wargame.
Hobbli's Notes
This is a beloved entry in Dan Verssen's Leader series, prized by solo wargamers for its tight mission-planning puzzle and genuine campaign-length stakes. Managing pilot fatigue against mission needs creates real tension without requiring a huge rules overhead by wargame standards. It's a niche pick that won't appeal outside the solo/wargaming crowd, but within that space it's a well-regarded, replayable design.
What we like
- Deep, replayable solo campaign structure.
- Historically accurate campaigns and aircraft loadouts.
- Meaningful pilot fatigue and experience management.
- Eight varied campaigns extend long-term play.
- Rewards careful tactical mission planning.
Keep in mind
- Strictly single-player, so it won't work for groups.
- Rules and mission planning have a real learning curve.
- Niche military theme won't appeal to everyone.
Who it's for
Best for solo wargamers and military aviation enthusiasts aged 12 and up looking for a mission-planning campaign game.
