About the game
Stronghold is an asymmetric siege game for 2-4 players where one side defends a castle and the other commands an endless legion trying to break through. Defenders earn victory points each turn they hold the walls, repairing defenses, training soldiers, and building cannons, while attackers equip their troops, construct war machines, and even turn to black magic to force their way in. The board depicts both the stronghold and the surrounding terrain the invaders must cross. It's a tense race against time from designer Ignacy Trzewiczek.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli regards Stronghold as a standout in asymmetric strategy, capturing the desperation of a siege from both sides of the wall. The mismatched objectives, survive versus conquer, create genuinely different puzzles for each player to solve. It's a heavier game that rewards careful resource planning and rules mastery. The steep complexity and two-hour playtime mean it's best reserved for a dedicated strategy session rather than a casual pickup game.
What we like
- Strongly asymmetric attacker-versus-defender roles.
- Tense race-against-the-clock structure for defenders.
- Deep resource management on both sides of the siege.
- Rewarding for fans of heavier strategic games.
Keep in mind
- High complexity (3.67) with a steep learning curve.
- Risk of imbalance if one side masters their role faster than the other.
- Longer 120-minute playtime demands real commitment.
Who it's for
Best for strategy gamers aged 14+ who enjoy asymmetric conflict, primarily as an intense 2-player duel (with team play up to 4).
