About the game
Escape From Colditz is a classic 1-vs-many semi-cooperative game where one player takes on the German Security Officer while the rest play Escape Officers representing Allied prisoners of war. The Escape Officers must scrounge equipment like rope and wire cutters to engineer a breakout, while the Security Officer hunts them down and locks them in solitary confinement. Play unfolds across the historic Colditz Castle map over a set number of rounds, with the Escape Officers winning if enough POWs get free before time runs out. Notably, the game was co-designed by Major P.R. Reid, a real British officer who successfully escaped Colditz during World War II, lending it genuine historical authenticity.
Hobbli's Notes
Few games mix theme and history as directly as this one: the fact that one of its designers actually lived the escape adds real weight to the tension at the table. The asymmetric one-vs-many structure creates a wonderfully paranoid, cat-and-mouse dynamic that still holds up decades after its original release. It's a bit of a relic in terms of production and pacing, but the core social deduction remains compelling.
What we like
- The asymmetric one-vs-many structure creates constant tension and negotiation.
- Genuine historical pedigree, co-designed by a real Colditz escapee, gives the theme real weight.
- The equipment-gathering and escape-planning puzzle rewards careful, patient play.
- It remains a beloved classic with decades of staying power.
Keep in mind
- At three hours, it's a lengthy commitment for a game with fairly simple core actions.
- The Security Officer role can feel like an uphill battle against several coordinated escapees.
- Older production and pacing may feel dated next to modern hidden-movement designs.
Who it's for
Groups of 2-6 players aged 12+ who enjoy asymmetric hidden-movement games with strong historical theming and social tension.
