About the game
EastFront II is a two-player block wargame that recreates the brutal Eastern Front of World War II, from the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941 through the war's end in May 1945. Using Columbia Games' iconic wooden blocks, players command German and Soviet forces across linkable six-month scenarios, managing production, supply, and the harsh Russian weather. The fog-of-war block system keeps enemy unit strength hidden until battle, forcing careful reconnaissance and bold gambles. With two large hex maps covering the Trans-Volga, Balkans, Finland, and Baku, this is a sprawling, historically grounded simulation for serious wargamers.
Hobbli's Notes
This is a dense, old-school block wargame that rewards patience and a love of logistics over flashy production values. Hobbli's team appreciates how the hidden-strength blocks create genuine tension and force real command decisions, but this is not a game for a casual weeknight - expect a serious time commitment and a steep rules overhead. If you already love Columbia's block system, EastFront II is one of the genre's benchmarks.
What we like
- The block system creates genuine fog of war without hidden charts.
- Linkable six-month scenarios let you play the entire Eastern Front campaign.
- Deep logistics and supply mechanics reward long-term planning.
- Two connectable maps give a large, immersive playing area.
Keep in mind
- The 240-minute playtime and D-grade commitment score make this a major undertaking.
- Rules complexity will be a barrier for newcomers to wargaming.
- Strictly two-player, limiting who you can play it with.
Who it's for
Best suited for experienced wargamers aged 14+ who enjoy long, detail-heavy two-player simulations and don't mind a multi-hour commitment.
