About the game
The End of the Triumvirate casts three players as Caesar, Pompeius, and Crassus, each vying for dominance in ancient Rome through military conquest, political maneuvering, or personal skill. Each round unfolds across supply, movement, and action phases, as players collect gold and legions, attack rivals, or persuade citizens to gain political favor. Victory can be achieved militarily by conquering provinces, politically by winning consul elections, or through raising personal competence to its peak. Designed specifically for three players, with a two-player variant included, it delivers a tense, multi-path power struggle set in the ancient world.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's editorial team appreciates how The End of the Triumvirate is purpose-built for exactly three players, addressing a player count that's often an afterthought in strategy games. The three distinct victory paths keep the political, military, and personal-development strategies all viable and interesting. It's a solid pick for groups who enjoy ancient historical themes and area-control conflict with real teeth. The niche three-player focus, however, does limit its flexibility for larger or smaller groups.
What we like
- Purpose-designed for three players, a rare and welcome focus.
- Multiple distinct paths to victory keep strategies varied.
- Rich ancient Roman political theme with real thematic integration.
- Balanced turn structure gives every player meaningful choices each round.
Keep in mind
- Rigid three-player design limits table flexibility.
- Political maneuvering may be less appealing to purely military-minded players.
- Moderate complexity and 90-minute runtime require an invested group.
