About the game
Through the Desert is an elegant abstract strategy game in which two to five players guide tribes of nomads, extending caravans of colored camels across the desert to claim oases and block rival routes. Points come from multiple sources, including caravan length, oasis control, and enclosed territory, giving players several viable strategies. Its clean rules and colorful camel pieces make it approachable, while the tile-laying strategy underneath is often compared to Go. It's part of designer Reiner Knizia's celebrated tile-laying trilogy.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli considers this one of Knizia's most elegant designs, simple enough to teach in minutes yet full of tense territorial decisions. It shines especially well as a sharp two-player game.
What we like
- Simple rules conceal genuinely deep strategic tension.
- Plays quickly at around 45 minutes.
- Works especially well as a two-player game.
- Colorful, tactile components add table appeal.
Keep in mind
- Abstract theme may not appeal to players wanting a story.
- Higher player counts can slow the pace with more blocking.
- Limited direct interaction beyond territorial blocking.
Who it's for
Abstract strategy fans and families looking for a quick, thoughtful game will enjoy this for two to five players, ages 8 and up.
