About the game
Ingenious, also known as Einfach Genial, is an abstract tile-placement game by Reiner Knizia where players place domino-style hex tiles to extend lines of matching colored symbols. The clever scoring twist requires players to track their worst-performing color rather than their best, forcing balanced play across all six colors instead of specializing. Reaching a score of 18 in any color grants an extra turn, adding a layer of tactical timing to the otherwise meditative puzzle. With solitaire and team-play variants included, it's a tight, elegant abstract game for 1-4 players.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's team considers Ingenious a masterclass in elegant abstract design: simple placement rules, but the 'weakest link' scoring creates constant tension between building your strengths and shoring up your weaknesses. It plays quickly and scales well from solo puzzling to competitive multiplayer and team variants. The lack of theme won't appeal to everyone, but as a pure strategy puzzle it's hard to beat. A great pick for fans of Knizia's tight, mathematical game designs.
What we like
- Elegant 'weakest color' scoring twist forces balanced strategic play.
- Quick to learn but offers real long-term strategic depth.
- Includes solitaire and team-play variants for varied group sizes.
- Compact, portable design suits quick sessions anywhere.
Keep in mind
- Abstract theme may feel dry for players wanting narrative or immersion.
- Limited direct player interaction beyond blocking tile placements.
- Some players may find the scoring rule counterintuitive at first.
Who it's for
Great for abstract strategy fans aged 8+ who enjoy tight, mathematical puzzles, playing solo or in groups of up to 4, including team variants.
