About the game

Great Western Trail sends players on repeated cattle drives from Texas to Kansas City, aiming to arrive each time with the most valuable herd possible. Along the trail, you hire cowboys to improve your cattle, craftsmen to build new buildings, and engineers for the railroad, all while managing a growing deck of cards. Buildings placed along the route benefit everyone who passes through them, adding a layer of shared strategy. Victory points come from delivered cattle, buildings, and railroad progress.

Hobbli's Notes

Great Western Trail is a standout Alexander Pfister design that blends deckbuilding with route-building in a way few other games attempt. The tension between managing your herd's quality and optimizing your path along the trail creates a deeply satisfying strategic puzzle. Its variable board setup and building interactions keep repeated plays feeling fresh. It has rightly become a modern staple for fans of hybrid euro games.

What we like

  • Inventive fusion of deckbuilding and route-building.
  • Satisfying long-term herd and building optimization.
  • High replayability from the variable board setup.
  • Meaningful player interaction along the shared trail.

Keep in mind

  • Significant rules overhead and setup time.
  • Playtime can stretch long, especially with four players.
  • Some luck in tile and building availability along the trail.
