About the game
That's Life! (also known as Verflixxt!) is a modern take on the classic roll-and-move formula from designers Michael Kiesling and Wolfgang Kramer. Players move tokens along a shrinking path of positive and negative tiles, collecting whichever tile they leave last: as long as no lurking guard is still there. Clever choices about which token to move, and whether to shift a guard instead, add real decision-making to the dice rolls. It's an easy-to-learn, slightly mischievous family game that's been charming players since the mid-2000s.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's team has a soft spot for That's Life! as a modernized roll-and-move that still lets you make meaningful choices, not just watch dice decide your fate. The shrinking-path mechanic is a clever twist that keeps the game fresh round after round. It's light, a little silly, and perfectly pitched for family game nights where not everyone wants heavy strategy. A great pick when you want nostalgia with just enough modern polish.
What we like
- Simple roll-and-move rules that are easy to teach to any age.
- Clever tile-shrinking path adds strategic decisions to dice luck.
- Quick 30-minute playtime keeps things moving.
- Scales comfortably for family groups up to 6 players.
- Nostalgic yet modernized take on a classic genre.
Keep in mind
- Dice rolls still heavily influence outcomes.
- Limited strategic depth for players wanting a meatier game.
- Guard-moving choices can feel arbitrary to new players.
- Not much direct player interaction beyond occasional blocking.
