About the game

Roma is a card and dice game by Stefan Feld set amid Rome's political turmoil, where players use powerful cards to defend their position or pull strings from the shadows. Cards are placed at numbered dice stations, and dice rolled each turn activate those stations, triggering the card's effect. Effects manipulate cards in play, generate money, or grant victory points, with a fixed pool of points driving the game to its close. It's a tight two-player duel of card placement and dice timing.

Hobbli's Notes

We enjoy how Feld's dice-activation mechanic forces you to plan around unpredictable rolls rather than fight them: it's a clever tension between planning and chance. As a two-player-only game it's a great quick strategic duel, though its niche audience may wish for more player counts. A tidy, clever design for fans of card-driven euros.

What we like

  • Clever dice-activation and card-placement combo mechanic.
  • Quick 45-minute playtime.
  • Tight, tactical two-player duel.
  • Can be combined with sequel Arena: Roma II.

Keep in mind

  • Strictly two-player only.
  • Dice-driven activation adds variance some players may dislike.

Who it's for

Good for two players aged 8 and up who enjoy quick, tactical card-and-dice duels.
