About the game

Emberheart sends you to the mystical island of Emberheart as one of the King's champions, tasked with protecting the last dragons from ruthless poachers. On your turn, you either take an Aide token for a unique bonus or send a party of hirelings, Grunts, Scouts, Rangers, or Wardens, to one of the island's locations to compete for limited rewards. The size of your party determines both how early you choose rewards and how easily rivals can outbid you. A trainable Dragon Companion can join your parties for extra bonuses, but pushing too far on the Flame track carries a cost. After five rounds, the champion with the most Glory from rescued dragons, recruited heroes, and dragon training becomes the new Dragon Ambassador.

Hobbli's Notes

Emberheart layers a satisfying bidding tension onto classic worker placement: deciding how many hirelings to commit to a location, and when to hold back, gives every round real stakes. Hobbli's team is intrigued by the Dragon Companion training system, which adds a nice personalization layer on top of the core placement game. As a brand-new release, it hasn't had extensive play at our tables yet, but the combination of worker placement and bidding mechanics with a fantasy dragon-rescue theme looks like a promising mid-weight strategy game.

What we like

  • Clever bidding-style worker placement adds real tension to each round.
  • Trainable Dragon Companion adds a personalized strategic layer.
  • Fantasy dragon-rescue theme is warm and appealing without being overly dark.
  • Quick-playing at 90 minutes for its complexity level.

Keep in mind

  • As a brand-new release, long-term replayability is still unproven.
  • Worker placement genre may feel familiar to experienced Euro gamers.
  • Flame track risk-management adds a rules layer that newer players must learn.
