About the game
Unmatched: Battle of Legends, Volume Three throws four wildly different heroes into fast, tactical duels: the pirate Blackbeard, the beastly Chupacabra, the trickster Loki, and the cursed Pandora. Each fighter has a unique deck and set of abilities that captures their legend, so no two match-ups play the same. Combat is resolved by comparing attack and defense cards rather than dice, rewarding careful hand management and positioning on the grid-like board. A double-sided board (including a Santa's Workshop map) and pre-washed miniatures round out the presentation. As with every Unmatched release, these heroes can be mixed with fighters from other sets for endless new combinations.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's editorial team loves how Unmatched nails the feel of asymmetric combat without ever needing a rules lawyer at the table -- once you know the core loop, every new hero just adds fresh puzzles to solve. Volume Three's line-up is a fun grab bag of tones, from swashbuckling to trickster mischief, which keeps games from feeling samey. The catch is that the game rewards (and somewhat requires) owning multiple sets to unlock the best match-ups, so newcomers may feel like they're missing half the fun until they expand their collection. Still, as a standalone product it delivers tight, replayable two-to-four-player skirmishes.
What we like
- Deep tactical decisions emerge from a surprisingly simple card-comparison combat system.
- Four asymmetric heroes each feel genuinely different to play.
- No dice or randomness means outcomes come down to skill and planning.
- High-quality miniatures and dual-sided board add great table presence.
- Fully compatible with every other Unmatched set for endless new match-ups.
Keep in mind
- Best value and variety only really show up once you own multiple sets.
- Some players may find the strict balance less satisfying at four than at two.
- Learning each hero's card set takes a few plays before strategies click.
Who it's for
Best for tactical gamers aged 9 and up who enjoy quick, no-luck combat duels, whether head-to-head or in two-versus-two teams.
