About the game
Res Arcana Duo is both a standalone two-player game and an expansion for the acclaimed Res Arcana, adding 35% more cards to the system. Players choose a mage, gather the five magical essences, Life, Death, Elan, Calm, and Gold, and use them to craft artifacts, summon dragons, and claim places of power on the way to victory. This version introduces a drafting method built specifically for two players and strips out direct attacks, making it a friendlier option for duos who prefer a purely constructive race. Games typically wrap up in just four to six tight, tactical rounds.
Hobbli's Notes
Thomas Lehmann's engine-building design shines in this leaner, faster two-player configuration. Removing attacks makes it a great choice for couples or friends who want the tactical depth of Res Arcana without the conflict, and the tighter card pool keeps decisions sharp rather than overwhelming. It's compatible with the full Res Arcana line, so it grows nicely if you want to expand later.
What we like
- The two-player-specific drafting method is tightly tuned for exactly this player count.
- Removing direct attacks makes it a welcoming choice for players who dislike conflict.
- It's compatible with the full Res Arcana ecosystem for future expansion.
- Rounds are fast and tactical, typically wrapping up in four to six turns.
Keep in mind
- It's strictly a two-player game, limiting its use for larger groups.
- The essence-and-artifact system has a learning curve for newcomers to the Res Arcana line.
- Players who enjoy direct conflict may miss the attack options from the base game.
