About the game
Etherstone takes place on the forgotten planet of Nobura, where faction leaders unite to fend off the parasitic Vacuous threatening all life. Players draft a hand of cards and a unique leader, then choose one action per turn, dice drafting, summoning creatures, attacking, resting, or invoking a Void Pact, to earn victory points. Leaders bring asymmetric abilities, life totals, and strength values that shape distinct strategies across games. The game ends when any of several end-game triggers occur, rewarding efficient, aggressive play.
Hobbli's Notes
As a brand-new release, we're still getting a full read on Etherstone, but the drafting-into-combat structure from veteran designers Gigli and Luciani looks promising. The asymmetric leader powers should offer solid replay variety once more plays are logged. We'll keep an eye on how the community responds as more tables get it to the table.
What we like
- Asymmetric leader abilities offer varied strategic approaches.
- Flexible turn structure with five distinct action choices.
- Designed by experienced designers with a strong pedigree.
- Multiple end-game triggers keep games from dragging.
Keep in mind
- As a new release, long-term balance and replay value are still unproven.
- Sci-fi/fantasy theme description is somewhat abstract and hard to visualize.
- Drafting phase may create early-game imbalance between players.
Who it's for
Likely to appeal to card-game and light-conflict fans, ages 14+, in groups of 2-4 who enjoy drafting and asymmetric powers.
