About the game
Men-Nefer transports players to ancient Egypt's first great capital, tasking them with developing the city's culture, trade, and religious life across three eras. Combining worker placement with tile drafting, players acquire knowledge in the houses of life, trade along the Nile, embalm nobles, erect sphinxes, and contribute to the Great Pyramids. Careful positioning determines who can pass through the afterlife toward Aaru, adding a distinctive thematic throughline to the scoring. Each era rewards the player with the greatest prestige, so long-term planning is essential across the game's full arc. It's a richly themed, mid-to-heavy euro from designer Germán P. Millán.
Hobbli's Notes
Men-Nefer stands out for weaving its ancient Egyptian theme directly into its worker-placement-and-drafting mechanics rather than pasting it on top. The three-era structure gives real shape to the game's strategic arc, rewarding players who plan ahead for how their engine will mature. It's a newer title in our catalog, so while the design looks strong on paper, we're still building a deeper read on how it plays across many tables.
What we like
- Rich ancient Egyptian theme is deeply woven into the mechanics.
- Three-era structure gives the game a satisfying long-term arc.
- Combines worker placement and tile drafting for varied decisions each turn.
- Solo mode adds accessibility beyond group play.
Keep in mind
- Long 120-minute playtime and high complexity are a real commitment.
- As a newer release, long-term replay value is still being established.
- Dense rules may be intimidating for players new to heavier euros.
