About the game
Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar introduces a dynamic worker-placement system where workers ride giant interlocking gears that rotate each turn, changing which actions become available. Players balance short-term gains against the patience needed to let workers ride the gears to more powerful spaces. Corn functions as currency, while temples and crystal skulls offer competing paths to victory tied to the Mayan gods. It's a clever, tactile puzzle wrapped in a strong economic engine.
Hobbli's Notes
The gear mechanism is genuinely unique and creates an addictive timing puzzle that's rare in worker-placement games. It takes a play or two to click, but once it does, the tension of deciding when to pull workers off the gears is fantastic.
What we like
- Innovative gear-based worker placement unlike anything else on the market.
- Rewards careful timing and planning over raw resource accumulation.
- Multiple viable paths to victory through temples, skulls, and technology.
- Strong player interaction over limited gear positions.
Keep in mind
- Steep learning curve for players new to worker placement.
- Corn mismanagement can feel punishing and hard to recover from.
- Long turns from experienced players can create downtime.
