About the game
In Egizia, players act as builders in Ancient Egypt competing to earn the Pharaoh's favor by constructing monuments like the Sphinx, Obelisk, Temple, and Pyramid. Over five rounds, players place pawns along the banks of the Nile to gain workers, improve trade, influence the floods, or reserve rights to build monuments, with placements restricted to move only northward down the river. Grain must feed workers based on how the Nile's floods affected the fields that turn, and stones from owned quarries combine with reserved rights and workers to actually construct monuments. The directional worker-placement twist means each placement blocks certain later options while opening others. Whoever accumulates the most points from monuments and bonus cards after five rounds wins.
Hobbli's Notes
Egizia's directional Nile-placement twist on worker placement is a small rule change that creates outsized strategic tension, since where you place early shapes your entire turn. The grain-feeding mechanic adds a layer of resource anxiety that keeps every round meaningful. It's a fairly dry Euro presentation, so players wanting strong theme immersion may want to look elsewhere. A solid choice for fans of clever, focused worker-placement design.
What we like
- Clever directional worker placement along the Nile.
- Tight resource and grain management adds real tension.
- Satisfying monument-building theme tied closely to mechanics.
- Well-paced 90-minute playtime.
Keep in mind
- Early positional placement can lock out later players' options.
- Some luck from flood and card randomness each round.
- Dry Euro presentation may underwhelm theme-focused players.
Who it's for
Good for strategy gamers aged 12+ who enjoy worker placement and resource management, in groups of 2-4.
