About the game

Caylus casts players as master builders competing to construct King Philip the Fair's new castle while developing the surrounding medieval town. Workers are placed in buildings along a growing road to gather resources, earn income, or contribute materials directly to the castle for prestige and royal favor. A provost marker, manipulated by the players themselves, determines which buildings are active each turn, adding a layer of shared control over the game's pace. Whoever accumulates the most prestige by the time the castle is finished wins this dense worker placement classic.

Hobbli's Notes

Caylus is a foundational worker placement design that still holds up remarkably well nearly two decades later. The provost mechanism, where players collectively influence which buildings can be used, is a genuinely clever piece of shared control rarely matched elsewhere. It's a demanding game with real depth, best suited to groups who already enjoy heavier euros. We consider it essential for anyone building out a serious worker placement collection.
