About the game
Set during Sicily's brutal 1980s mafia conflicts, La Famiglia: The Great Mafia War is a team-based area-control game played 2 versus 2, with six mafia families each offering distinct special abilities. Rounds split into a planning phase, where you develop abilities and secretly commit fighters and orders, and a combat phase, where those orders are revealed and resolved. Fighters and bombs battle for control of Sicily's regions, and the game's combat system turns every clash into a tense psychological duel between teams. Success depends on how well partners combine and coordinate their asymmetric abilities.
Hobbli's Notes
La Famiglia stands out for its team-based structure layered onto area control combat: coordinating with a partner against another duo adds a social dimension you don't often see in wargames. The variable factions and hidden order system create real tension in every combat phase. This is a heavy, long game best suited to experienced groups who enjoy meaty conflict games with a strong social/team component.
What we like
- Unique 2v2 team structure adds a social layer to area-control combat.
- Asymmetric family abilities create varied strategies each game.
- Hidden order system makes combat phases genuinely tense.
- Rich mafia theme reinforced by strong production and mechanisms.
Keep in mind
- Very long, heavy playtime demands a serious group commitment.
- Fixed four-player requirement limits table flexibility.
- High complexity may overwhelm players new to area-control wargames.
- Team coordination adds a social dependency some groups may not enjoy.
