About the game

Terra Nova streamlines the acclaimed strategy game Terra Mystica into a faster, more accessible experience while keeping its core appeal intact. Each of up to four players controls one of ten asymmetric factions, expanding territory, erecting buildings, and pursuing round-to-round goals through clever network and route-building. Faction abilities create distinct strategic identities, rewarding players who lean into their faction's strengths. The chaining and grid-based territory expansion recreate Terra Mystica's satisfying spatial puzzle in a shorter package. It's an excellent entry point for players intrigued by Terra Mystica but intimidated by its complexity.

Hobbli's Notes

We appreciate how Terra Nova captures the territorial expansion and faction asymmetry that made Terra Mystica a modern classic, while trimming down the rules overhead considerably. It's a smart 'gateway' into that design space for players who found the original too dense. The variable player powers still create meaningfully different games each session. A worthy, more approachable sibling to one of the genre's most respected titles.

What we like

  • Streamlined version of Terra Mystica's beloved territory-expansion gameplay.
  • Ten asymmetric factions provide strong variety and replayability.
  • Faster playtime makes the Terra Mystica formula more accessible.
  • Network and chaining mechanics create satisfying spatial puzzles.

Keep in mind

  • May feel like a lesser substitute to players who already own Terra Mystica.
  • Still carries moderate complexity that may challenge casual gamers.

Who it's for

Great for euro gamers aged 12+ curious about Terra Mystica-style territory building but wanting a lighter, faster entry point, best with 3-4 players.
