About the game
Leviathan Wilds sends 1-4 climbers scaling the bodies of colossal, frenzied leviathans in order to heal them by removing binding crystals. The game's board is a spiral-bound storybook, with each creature's body depicted across its own spread, and a connected campaign mode strings together twenty scenarios into an ongoing story. Each character's deck of multi-use cards determines how far they can climb, jump, or glide before running low on grip, and losing your grip sends you tumbling down the leviathan's body. As rage builds, the leviathan's own event deck grows more dangerous, testing the whole team's cooperation and timing.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's editorial team finds the storybook-as-board concept in Leviathan Wilds genuinely inventive, turning traversal into a tense push-your-luck puzzle unlike typical dungeon crawlers. The grip-and-fall system captures real physical tension without complicated rules overhead. As a newer, fairly niche cooperative title, we're less certain how it will hold up against more established campaign games over repeat plays. Groups drawn to unusual cooperative themes and inventive board design should find plenty to like here.
What we like
- Innovative spiral-bound storybook board depicting giant creatures.
- Deck-based grip and fall mechanic creates genuine climbing tension.
- Strong cooperative campaign with twenty included scenarios.
- Unique climbing and traversal theme sets it apart from typical co-ops.
Keep in mind
- Campaign-based scenarios have limited replay once completed.
- Deck-depletion mechanic may frustrate players unfamiliar with the system.
- Niche leviathan-climbing theme may be a harder sell to some groups.
Who it's for
Good for cooperative-minded players (8+) in groups of 1-4 who enjoy scenario-based campaign games with an unusual central theme.
