About the game
Bitoku casts players as forest spirits striving to become the next great guardian of the woods, aided by yōkai, kodamas, and traveling pilgrims. It blends hand management with deck-building: yōkai cards are placed for their abilities while dice-based guardians are sent into the forest's regions to build structures, gather resources, and score points. A personal player board adds a further strategic layer, giving experienced players plenty of paths to victory. Solo play is supported alongside a rich, mythology-inspired theme.
Hobbli's Notes
A lovely, thematic engine-builder that rewards careful hand and dice management. The multiple interacting systems (yōkai, guardians, personal board) take a play or two to gel, but the payoff is a satisfying web of synergies.
What we like
- Rich synergy between hand management, dice placement, and player board.
- Strong solo mode.
- Distinctive mythology theme woven into mechanics.
- Multiple viable paths to victory increase replayability.
Keep in mind
- Several interacting subsystems create a steep learning curve.
- Long playtime for the complexity level.
- Can feel fiddly with many small resource types to track.
Who it's for
Great for euro-game enthusiasts aged 12+ who enjoy engine-building and set collection; works well solo or with 2-4 players.
