About the game

Zapotec sends two to four players back to the pre-Columbian Valley of Oaxaca to build temples, cornfields, and villages that fuel pyramid construction and ritual sacrifice. Each round, players simultaneously choose an action card that determines their resource income, where they may build, and their turn order for the round: a clever triple-use of a single card. Over five tight rounds lasting about 75 minutes, players draft new cards each round while trying to out-plan their rivals for the best building spots. At the end, points are scored for pyramids, sacrifices, and ritual cards, with the highest total taking the win.

Hobbli's Notes

Designer Fabio Lopiano has a knack for elegant multi-use mechanisms, and the action cards here are a great example: one simple choice controls resources, building rights, and turn order all at once. The five-round structure keeps the game brisk without sacrificing meaningful strategic tension. We find the simultaneous card selection creates real anticipation each round as you try to predict what others will do. It's a strong pick for groups who enjoy tight, medium-weight strategy games with a satisfying puzzle at their core.

What we like

  • Elegant action cards that control three things at once.
  • Tight five-round structure keeps pacing brisk.
  • Rich historical Mesoamerican theme.
  • Rewards careful planning and reading opponents.

Keep in mind

  • Simultaneous selection can lead to analysis paralysis.
  • Area majority scoring can feel harsh for trailing players.
  • Abstract building system may underwhelm theme-first players.

Who it's for

Great for strategy gamers who enjoy area control and card-driven planning, in groups of one to four players.
