About the game
Pagan: Fate of Roanoke is a two-player asymmetric deduction game pitting a witch against a witch hunter in colonial-era America. The witch works secretly toward completing a ritual using potions, familiars, and charms, while the hunter recruits allies and investigates nine villagers to unmask her true identity before it's too late. Each side draws from its own fifty-card deck, and every turn is spent carefully spending action pawns to gather resources, information, or influence. It's a tense, information-heavy duel built entirely around bluffing and inference.
Hobbli's Notes
This is a niche title that leans hard into slow-burn deduction rather than direct conflict, so it rewards patient, cerebral players who enjoy piecing together hidden information over a long two-player session. We haven't had as much table time with this one as with bigger-name titles, so take our comparisons as a solid starting point rather than gospel.
What we like
- Genuinely asymmetric roles create two very different play experiences.
- Deep deduction puzzle rewards careful inference and memory.
- Variable fifty-card decks add meaningful replayability.
- Strong sense of tension and mind-gaming throughout each match.
Keep in mind
- Strictly limited to exactly two players.
- Steep learning curve with a lot of card text and interlocking systems.
- Niche colonial-witchcraft theme may not appeal to every group.
Who it's for
Best for adult pairs (12+) who enjoy deep asymmetric deduction duels and don't mind a longer rules learning curve, strictly for 2 players.
