About the game
The Night Cage is a fully cooperative, horror-themed tile-placement game where 1-5 players wake up lost in a pitch-black labyrinth. Each player's candlelight illuminates only the tiles connected to their own position, and moving away lets darkness swallow tiles forever. To escape, everyone must find a key, locate a gate, and get out before their light fails or a Wax Eater catches them. It's an atmospheric, tense race against fading candlelight and lurking monsters.
Hobbli's Notes
The vanishing-tile visibility mechanic is a genuinely clever way to generate horror-movie dread at the table. It's tense and memorable, though it can be punishing and occasionally feel unfair to newer groups still learning its rhythms.
What we like
- The disappearing-tile candlelight mechanic creates real tension.
- Scales smoothly from solo play up to five players.
- Quick to set up and play in about an hour.
- Strong horror atmosphere built from simple components.
Keep in mind
- Can be brutally difficult and punishing for new groups.
- Limited communication rules may frustrate some players.
- The tile-laying loop can feel repetitive over many plays.
Who it's for
Horror and puzzle fans ages 14 and up, great for solo play or small groups who enjoy tense cooperative challenges.
