About the game
A historical strategy game of 10th-century Viking trade, diplomacy, and territorial influence for 1-6 players. Players build alliances with rival Jarls, establish trading posts, and navigate longships along rivers and seas to expand their influence. Area majority, negotiation, and variable player powers combine into a rich economic engine. The eventual goal is to become the first Swedish monarch by out-maneuvering rivals both militarily and diplomatically.
Hobbli's Notes
Pax Viking rewards patient, big-picture thinkers who enjoy weaving alliances as much as building an economy. The negotiation and area-influence systems create genuine tension between cooperation and betrayal. At 90 minutes it's relatively lean for its complexity, though the mash-up of many systems (drafting, trading, tile placement, variable setup) means the rules overhead is real. This is one for groups who already love aggressive diplomacy layered onto Euro mechanics.
What we like
- Rich blend of negotiation, area influence, and economic engine-building.
- Solo mode included via a dedicated solitaire system.
- Thematic Viking setting with meaningful trading and alliance decisions.
- Variable player powers and set-up add replayability.
Keep in mind
- High downtime grade (D) means turns between yours can feel slow.
- Complexity (3.3) and many combined mechanisms create a steep learning curve.
- Negotiation-heavy play may not suit groups who dislike table talk and alliances.
Who it's for
Best for experienced strategy gamers aged 14+ who enjoy negotiation-heavy Euro games; comfortably scales from solo play up to a 6-player table.
