About the game
Pax Renaissance casts 2-4 players as Renaissance-era bankers who finance kings, sponsor voyages, fund secret cabals, or bankroll jihads and inquisitions. Using a card market, players acquire, sell, or play cards into their tableau while running trade fairs and trading voyages across a map of Europe stretching from Portugal to Crimea. Four distinct victory paths pull the continent toward imperialism, globalized trade, religious totalitarianism, or enlightened science and art. It's a dense, asymmetric economic engine with real historical weight behind every decision.
Hobbli's Notes
Phil Eklund's designs are never light reading, and Pax Renaissance is no exception, but the payoff for players willing to dig into the rules is a genuinely unique economic-historical simulation. The card market creates constant tension between denying opponents and building your own engine. This is very much a game for the table that already loves heavy, idea-dense euros.
