About the game

Pax Renaissance: 2nd Edition is a heavy card-driven strategy game in which players act as bankers steering Renaissance-era Europe toward one of several possible futures: imperialism, globalized trade, religious totalitarianism, or enlightened science and art. Through a market-driven drafting system, players finance kings and republics, sponsor exploration, and manipulate political and religious currents to nudge history in their preferred direction. The game's asymmetric win conditions and constantly shifting market create a highly interactive, unpredictable strategic landscape. This edition streamlines components and adds new expanded rule options for advanced play.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's editorial team considers Pax Renaissance one of the most intellectually demanding games in modern design: every action shifts the balance of power in unexpected ways. Its market mechanic, where cards you don't take become more valuable, creates fascinating psychological tension. Designer Phil Eklund's history-driven systems reward players who enjoy games as historical simulations as much as competitions. It's not for casual play, but dedicated groups will find enormous depth here.

What we like
