About the game

King of Tokyo: Dark Edition reimagines Richard Garfield's giant-monster dice-battler with an alternate, darker take on the fight for control of Tokyo. Players roll dice to attack, heal, gain energy, or earn victory points, deciding each turn whether to hold the coveted Tokyo spot or retreat to safety. Energy earned from dice rolls buys powerful mutation cards that grant lasting special abilities, adding a light drafting layer atop the dice-chucking core. This collector's edition adds deluxe embossed components and moody all-new art while keeping the classic King of Tokyo rules intact. It's a quick, chaotic, and family-friendly monster brawl with a stylish new coat of paint.

Hobbli's Notes

King of Tokyo has always been a fantastic gateway game for teaching push-your-luck dice mechanics, and this Dark Edition mostly just makes an already great game look even better on the table. The core gameplay is unchanged, so longtime fans are really buying it for the deluxe components and darker aesthetic rather than new mechanics. Still a fantastic, chaotic 30-minute romp for groups of any experience level.

What we like

  • Deluxe embossed components and striking new art elevate the presentation.
  • Fast, chaotic dice-rolling combat is easy for all ages to learn.
  • Energy-based mutation cards add light strategic customization.
  • Quick 30-minute playtime fits easily into any game night.

Keep in mind

  • Gameplay is unchanged from the base game, offering nothing mechanically new.
  • Heavy reliance on dice luck can frustrate more strategy-minded players.
  • Player elimination from Tokyo attacks can end the game early for some.

Who it's for

Great for ages 8 and up, families and groups of 2-6 who enjoy light, chaotic dice-battling games.
