About the game
Three Sisters is a roll-and-write game centered on backyard farming, named for the indigenous technique of planting corn, beans, and squash together for mutual benefit. Each player fills out a personal sheet tracking gardens, an apiary, compost, perennials, goods, fruit, and a tool-filled shed, with many tracks feeding bonuses into one another. Over eight rounds, players draft dice from a rotating action wheel, using them to plant or water crops and trigger actions tied to the space the die came from. The interconnected tracks reward planning several steps ahead as harvests unlock goods, bonuses, and points. A built-in solo mode lets players compete against their own past scores.
Hobbli's Notes
Three Sisters stands out among roll-and-write games for how tightly its many interlocking tracks reward forward planning rather than pure luck. It manages to feel relaxing and cerebral at once, which is a neat trick for the genre. The sheet can look intimidating at first glance, though it settles quickly once the first round or two click. A strong choice for fans of Euro-style roll-and-writes who want more depth than most in the category.
